Carroll Business Systems Celebrates 100 Years of Serving the Hospitality Industry!
Leo W. Carroll, Sr. founded Carroll Business Systems, Inc. in 1919. Originally called Carroll Typewriter Co., Leo successfully navigated the small business through the Depression and WWII, in a time when selling and servicing typewriters was a high-volume profession. His oldest son, Leo W. Carroll, Jr. joined the company after WWII—Leo’s younger son, Joe, joined the company in 1955 after graduating from SMSU in Springfield.
Carroll Office Machines, as it was known then, sold and serviced typewriters and adding machines. Joe sensed that there was potential in the cash register business, so in the 1960s the company began selling mechanical cash registers made by Anker and Sweda. The 1970s ushered in the first electronic cash registers and within a few years the company was installing complex scanning systems in grocery stores and guest check control systems for restaurants. Typewriters and calculators were becoming a smaller and smaller percentage of the business.
Mr. Carroll, Sr. retired in 1974 and the two Carroll brothers continued to grow the business. In 1979, Joe Carroll’s son Mark joined the company while studying at SMSU. Mark graduated in 1983, Joe passed away in 1984 and Leo, Jr. retired in 1985. Over the span of just a few years, the family business fell to only one Carroll for the first time since the mid 40s.
Since then, Carroll Business Systems has experienced the most dynamic period of growth in the company’s long history. Today our average transaction size dwarfs an entire year’s revenue from the 30′s and 40′s. Carroll Business Systems has expanded both in size and scope. In 1995, CBS purchased the MICROS distribution for the Kansas City market and in 1997 acquired the dealership in Omaha, Nebraska. The Kansas and Nebraska markets are handled by a wholly owned subsidiary called HMS, based in Lenexa, KS.
Carroll Business Systems, Inc. along with HMS now employs 50+ well trained and motivated people across six offices over a five state region. We believe that the key to a successful business is maintaining long-term relationships with our customers. In 2019, we celebrated our 100-year commitment to total customer satisfaction—the vision of Leo, Sr.— which remains the core of our service today. In 2020, we merged with North American Bancard (NAB), and we are now known solely as HMS, though the business itself has not changed at all.
We bring together seasoned professionals from the hospitality and retail industries as well as the management information field to deliver system solutions to your business. Our experience sets our company and our associates apart. On top of this, we add our close working relationships with the industry’s leading software and hardware suppliers. The result is a premier point-of-sale (POS) and back-office system uniquely designed for your business from one of MICROS’s oldest and largest resellers.
